For sale is a vintage handmade child’s Civil war re-enactor’s uniform. This was worn by a tall-ish, very skinny nine year old for some of the Civil War Centennial encampments. The uniform consists of woolen trousers with suspenders; a woolen uniform coat with 8 CSA buttons; a commercially made shirt with an Antietam Centennial patch; and a CSA Civil War Commemoration belt made of genuine steerhide. Although handmade, the seamstress (my mother-in-law) was an excellent one and the jacket and trousers look professionally made. The uniform coat has six CSA buttons in the front and two in back. Four pins at the neck create the North Carolina origin for the uniform. Three red lines at the shoulders denote rank. The jacket looks to made of wool and has a satiny lining so it isn’t scratchy. The jacket measures 14.5 at the shoulder seams. The sleeves are about 20 from the seam to the bottom of the sleeve, but there is more than an inch of seam at the bottom of the sleeve that it could be let out a little. From the top of the front closure to the bottom is about 16. The uniform trousers are made of the same woolen material, but are not lined. There is a pocket on each side of the pants. They have a pair of traditional suspenders that could be replaced with modern suspenders as the elastic in them is shot after over 50 years. They have a zipper fly with 2 buttons. The waist is about 23″ and the leg length is 33.5″ along the pressed front seam. It it 1.25 wide and has a metal CSA buckle. The belt is just over 32 long, including the buckle. It has been worn, but is not too worn to wear again. The shirt is gray and commercially made, but with red thread run over the seams so that it matches the rest of the uniform. The label reads Elbeco poplin, 100% cotton Sanforized. It was made by his mother for him. He appeared in numerous newspaper pictures and at least one magazine cover in the uniform.
