Charles I on the Phoenix Tower’ by Robert Alexander Hillingford. The painting – which depicts the King on the fortified city walls of Chester having just witnessed the rout of his army at the Battle of Rowton Heath – is signed by the artist and presented in a fine quality gold metal leaf frame. Rowton Heath saw the comprehensive defeat of the last significant Royalist force in England, and Charles I is said to have watched the battle with dignified stoicism from the Phoenix Tower alongside the Mayor of Chester Sir Francis Gamul. Today, the inscription upon the tower states:’King Charles stood on this tower, September 24. 1645, and saw his army defeated on Rowton Moor. Robert Alexander Hillingford was a highly successful Victorian painter of historical and literary scenes who became most famous for his portrayals of the Napoleonic Wars. Between 1864 and 1902 Hillingford exhibited 29 works at the Royal Academy, and numerous others the British Institution and the Royal Society of British Artists in London.
