Many extant examples are made from a combination of wool uppers and leather foxing and all leather as well. We decided to copy an all leather style to meet the demands of modern renacting. Judging by the large number of surviving examples, these shoes represent some of the most widely worn ones of the time. We developed these last directly from original examples and then extrapolated them to modern feet. They feature the classic tapered toe of the 1860’s profile. The bodies are 100% silk, lined in cotton drill. Eyelets are hand done, and the silk binding is hand applied. Soles are attached by hand, all stitches concealed in the channel cut along the edge of the sole. Made in size 11. Made from a pair in a private collection, these shoes have shown up in period photographs showing both civilian and military use. A very similiar pair was identified to have been worn my an officer of the USS Monitor. Of ankle height, and closed along the front inset vamp with brass eyelets. All leather pull strap along rear seam, and soles attached with Vermont wood pegs Size 10.
